Here is what I am currently doing to maintain and/or move out of a tech monopoly (for various reasons):
- ✅ cleans up my photos in my iphone (quarterly)
- ✅ closed Prime – you will lose your digital movie and book purchases
- ✅ closed Amazon
- ✅ with that went Kindle and deleted Goodreads (moved to woman supported StoryGraph, user ‘lovespeanutbutter’)
- ✅ going to close Microsoft OneDrive and email (went to proton)
- [in process] going to close gmail drive and email (still looking for good cloud alternatives – please recommend)
- ✅ get of Chrome browser (sad, I heart Chrome) and move to Firefox
- FB/IG/Threads account deletion TBD (Threads is like old school Twitter right now)
- find alternative to WhatsApp and potentially maps
- move off of Apple products. That’s gonna be tough as I like the useability.
Also it’s so much work to untangle from all these digital things. Like all accounts will need to be email updated. Huge headache, but it will be better.
New:
- ✅ deletes Wayfair
If I download my OneDrive files on to my local network PC, why does Microsoft’s OneDrive retain a copy?
It took me a while to find the answer. Essentially you are “copying” files instead of moving. This is a feature with the new Microsoft OneDrive with CoPilot assistance. The ability to revert back to the classic OneDrive is obsolete in the personal web version.
The reason files stay on OneDrive after downloading, “(is) Files stay on OneDrive after downloading
because the service is designed for continuous, two-way synchronization, not just one-time file transfers. When you “download” or open a file, OneDrive keeps a copy in the cloud and on your device to ensure it remains backed up, updated across all platforms, and available for offline use.”
[Note to self – how do I turn off Google’s AI assitant (or any of them) as I don’t want to support this stuff as it’s draining water the global water supplies and destroying people’s lively-hoods
- temp fix add “-ai” to your search (ex: “how to train your dragon -ai”]
anyway there is a 93 day retention policy with Microsoft for delted files and drive version (seems this varies by project with the recycle bin and second-stage recycle bin)
